What Is Involved With Termite Treatment Tenting?
Greetings to you reader and welcome to the blog post of Alternative Exterminating about termite treatment. Here you will learn what tenting means and how it is done.
Termite tenting also referred to as termite fumigation is a process where a structure is completely covered with a sealed, nylon tent, after which it will be filled with a poisonous gas to kill drywood termites. These insects will literally eat their way through wood, leaving worm-like tunnels behind them. And when left unchecked, the damage they do will eventually weaken the structure. Tenting is one good way to deal with an entire drywood termite infestation.
This extermination method can be quite expensive and will take one or two days to complete. The house will be sealed off, so alternative arrangements need to be made to stay with friends, family or at a nearby hotel. The fumigant, which is usually sulfuryl fluoride, is colorless, odorless, and does not leave a residue, and when left long enough, will penetrate wood, killing any termite infestations.
Preparation for this means removing the likes of pets, fish tanks, and all living plants from the house beforehand. All food and medicine must be sealed in special plastic bags, which your fumigator service will often provide, or the items can be removed from the house. There could also be a few special instructions pertaining to mattresses or pillows which are wrapped in waterproofed covers. These items may also have to be removed from their covers or taken from the house.
Any outdoor shrubs and plants must be cleared along the perimeter of the house in order to create a walkway for the workers, in addition, to allowing the tenting to reach the floor. A homeowner may have to remove a plank or two from fences which butt up to the house if a gate isn’t nearby. The ground bordering the house will need to be soaked to keep the fumigant from seeping into the soil and affecting plants.
